Integrated GNSS and Mobile Communications Terminal
Integrating a GPS-EGNOS receiver into a communication terminal using the TETRAPOL standard.
The objective of NAVCOM is the development and demonstration of an Integrated Navigation/ Mobile Communication User Terminal based on the TETRAPOL system. TETRAPOL is a new fully-secured-digital solution designed to meet the growing needs and expectations of highly-demanding Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) users such as public safety forces, transport, or industry.
Within the project, two main specific applications are foreseen – on the one hand tracking and tracing of mobile targets, on the other hand security and emergency location determination. In the context of these two applications, the user requirements will be defined in terms of equipment features (size (mobile), low-power, low-cost, …) and the quality of service (accuracy, frequency of location update, service availability …).
The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) will be used to improve and augment the service of the satellite navigation system GPS. The implementation of the GPS/EGNOS receiver will be characterised by the design, system simulation, component design, prototyping and testing of all analog and digital components. The GPS/EGNOS receiver will be assisted by and integrated in the communication terminal using the TETRAPOL standard.
A subsequent demonstration phase has to verify the performance of the system in the field of tracking mobile targets and security and emergency location determination – all based on TETRAPOL to provide an Automatic Vehicle Localization (AVL) System.
