Location based service for analysing escaping crowds of people in crisis situations to support first responders

Aims

The LOBSTER project develops a system for analysing escaping crowds of people in crisis situations which can be used by first responders as coordination and decision support system.

Brief Description

Within the project LOBSTER, a system for analysing escaping crowds of people in crisis situations within public buildings/constructions (e.g. hospitals, shopping centers, airports, etc.) is developed. For the localisation and the analysis of the activities of the escaping groups of people, the positioning technologies GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), WLAN (Wireless Local area Network) and MEMS (Micro Electronic Motion Sensor) of common smart phones are used. The determined positions are transmitted to a LBS centre in case of distress. In the centre, these data are used in combination with building layouts and mathematical filter technologies (particle filter and Kalman Filter) to analyse and predict the escape behaviour. This analysis supports the first responders to carry out an improved coordination and resource scheduling. The first responders themselves are equipped with a device which is used to connect to the LBS centre to get all the information.
